It’s hard to think of a living poet better suited to editing an anthology of poems about the natural world than Ada Limón, the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States. Though this book doesn’t contain any of her poems, her presence runs through it like a river: her warmth, thoughtfulness, love of the world, willingness to face what’s hard, and belief in the importance of our connections to each other and the world around us. Her introduction made me cry.

I love everything Billy-Ray Belcourt has ever written, so it’s no big surprise that his latest, a collection of short stories, blew me out of the water. I had a rare experience while reading this book where I kept putting it down, thinking, “I cannot possibly read another sentence as beautiful as this one.” And then, a paragraph later, another sentence so utterly alive and breathtaking that, once again, I’d have to pause for a moment before continuing.

There is nothing I love more in a picture book than a good author’s note. Often author’s (and illustrator’s) notes provide important context and fascinating insights into how a particular book came to be. Sometimes authors and illustrators share their personal connection to a story. My favorite kind of author’s notes are the ones that make books bigger. These stories are all amazing on their own, but the author’s notes turn them into something expansive, something that lives beyond the page.
