January 2024 started off with a fair dinkum trip to Australia for 18 International Business majors in the Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB). Faculty members Candace TenBrink, Ph.D., and Dietrich von Biedenfeld, J.D., accompanied the students, facilitating meetings with high-level political, not-for-profit, and business leaders. As part of MDCOB's International Business major requirements.

While professional conferences for STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math) typically focus on STEM research, there’s one conference that focuses primarily on students: SACNAS (Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science). Last fall, UHD Natural Sciences faculty Drs. Lisa Morano and Yuan Yuan (Connie) Kang traveled with nine UHD students to give them the extraordinary experience the conference offers.

As Yale students brace themselves for yet another beloved period of class registration, the unavoidable topic of fulfilling distributional requirements returns. Sophomores who haven’t already completed at least one Science credit see themselves browsing topics such as “Primate Diversity and Evolution,” “Geoarchaeology,” and “Galaxies and the Universe.” The vast array of possible subjects is seen by some as intellectually stimulating; for others, it’s overwhelming.

Growing up, RN to BSN student Monica Cosby took the concept of latchkey kid to a whole new level. Born in Houston, Cosby grew up in Brownsville and lived with her parents until high school, when both parents returned to Houston for work. Only 14 years old, Cosby stayed behind. “I know it seems crazy that my parents would just leave me there, but they couldn’t make a living in Brownsville, and they didn’t want to uproot me,” she explained.

Executive Summary Despite the increasing number of refugee students, both globally and in the U.S., there is a significant lack of data concerning their pathways to higher education. To effectively understand the presence of refugee students on college campuses and support their educational success, we must bridge these data gaps. In response, the Presidents’ Alliance and Duolingo English Test released Mapping the Refugee Student Population in U.S. Higher Education Report.
