Pepperdine’s “Freedom Wall,” an on-campus bulletin with the intention of promoting free speech, is again riddled with controversy surrounding abortion. This follows a similar Freedom Wall controversy from 3 years prior, where a pro-life display was covered up and partly destroyed by pro-choice advocates. Abortion is on the minds of many Americans, perhaps more than usual due to the upcoming November election.

In the previous article, I discussed how God loves us no matter what, but Christians are still to lead distinct lives from secular ones. After focusing on the justification process–God accepts us and loves us no matter what–we must focus on the sanctification process, which is becoming more like Jesus and dying to ourselves.

My life took a turn for the better when I decided to take my faith seriously. After this radical change, I expected to have more in common with the Pepperdine students and professors–but I did not. It is reasonable to make general assumptions about someone’s life when they say they are Christian. Thus, it is puzzling when the beliefs or actions of Christians are inconsistent with who Jesus is and the lives he calls us to live.

Moderated by Caruso Law School Professor Donald Childress, Schenker was asked a series of questions regarding his former position as United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs as well as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Schenker studied and lived in the Middle East for four years and learned Arabic.
