US stocks have fallen further after Donald Trump imposed a new trade restriction on the chip designer Nvidia, rattling investors and triggering a sell-off across the semiconductor industry. The S&P 500 index dropped by about 1.3% in early trading, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq index down 2.1%. The Dow Jones fell 0.6%.

Growing uncertainty from Donald Trump’s tariffs has wiped more than £2bn from the value of one of the UK’s biggest listed businesses, sending shares in the paper cups to plastic bags distributor Bunzl plunging more than 25%. The FTSE 100 group, which provides everyday goods for other companies, warned about “macroeconomic uncertainty” as it said sales had been soft in its North American operation.

China has ordered its airlines not to take any further deliveries of Boeing jets, the latest move in its tit-for-tat trade war with the US. The Chinese government has asked carriers to stop purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from American companies, according to a report from Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter. The order from Beijing reportedly came after it announced its retaliatory tariffs of 125% on US goods over the weekend.

The owner of Pontins holiday parks has been charged with corporate manslaughter after part of a ceiling collapsed six years ago on to guests at a bar, one of whom died months later in hospital. Eighteen people were injured at the Brean Sands site in Somerset in February 2019 after a 40-metre section of structural ducting and ceiling fell inside an entertainment area and exposed live electrics.
