Providence St. Joseph’s hospital in Eureka is being sued by California Attorney General Robert Bonta for denying a local Eureka woman an emergency abortion. The lawsuit claims the hospital violated California’s emergency services law, the Unruh Civil Rights Act and the Unfair Competition Law, by discharging the woman rather than treating her. The woman says she was fifteen weeks pregnant with twins when her water broke prematurely, leaving one of the twin fetuses dead.

“Today we’re down here at our Chris Kemp training center on Hilfiker Lane, and right now our crews are participating in a 911 memorial stair climb.” Talia Flores, Community Risk Reduction Specialist, Humboldt Bay Fire explained to Redwood News on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. “As we all know, today is September 11th. 23 years ago, 343 firefighters from FDNY were killed on the terrorist attacks on 911 trying to rescue people from the World Trade Center,” said Tim Citro, Humboldt Bay Fire Chief.

The North Coast is no stranger to late summer heat. A heat advisory has been issued by the national weather service for interior Del Norte and Humboldt counties through Thursday night. Ryan Aylward, a meteorologist at the NOAA, told Redwood News, “Right now, the interior is expected to reach over 100 degrees for the next couple of days, and so the heat advisory will run through tomorrow evening.” It’s not just the hottest temperatures of the day that can be dangerous, though.

August’s full moon isn’t just any full moon, or even just any supermoon. It’s a Super Blue moon. But what is that? A full moon occurs, on average, every 29.5 days, when the moon is opposite the sun in its orbit around earth. The moon’s orbital path isn’t a perfect circle, though. for this reason, sometimes the moon is closer to us, and other times it’s further away. When the moon is at its closest point to earth in its orbit, that’s called perigee.

The Boise fire almost doubled in size overnight, and the evacuation orders in place in Humboldt and Siskiyou counties have been expanded. Four zones in Humboldt county are under evacuation orders along with one zone in Siskiyou county, which means: “leave now”.
