Three months after mysterious ball-shaped debris first started washing up on NSW beaches, the balls appear to be back with a vengeance.
Preliminary analysis of the original debris, which was found on beaches in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs back in October, found it was consistent with the makeup of tar balls — dark, spherical, sticky blobs formed from weathered oil which have been appearing on coastlines around the word for decades.

Victorian health authorities say they have located and disinfected the source of the recent Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that has claimed two lives and hospitalised dozens more.
In an alert issued on 29 July, the Victorian Department of Health announced that it had identified an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease with higher-than-expected numbers of cases across multiple locations in metropolitan Melbourne since 26 July.

Two separate instances of avian influenza (bird flu) were reported in Victoria yesterday — one in a child who returned from overseas earlier this year, and the other in the form of an outbreak on an egg farm.
Avian influenza is caused by an influenza type A virus that typically infects birds. Some subtypes are more likely to cause disease and death in poultry; these are known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses.
