Residents in the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District region will soon vote on a millage proposal aimed at supporting the area’s students with disabilities. The OAISD Special Education Millage Proposal, which is on the May 6 ballot, includes an 18-year renewal of the 1.2425 mills approved in 2007 and a 20-year restoration of 0.5 mill.

Sarah Taylor, sixth-grade teacher at Spring Lake Intermediate School, is the Grand Haven Tribune’s Teacher of the Week. Taylor has been a teacher for 15 years and has worked in the Spring Lake Public Schools district for 19 years. She is a well-respected teacher amongst her colleagues and has great rapport with her students. In her classroom, Taylor gives her sixth-graders a safe space to be silly and have fun with one another while also expanding their academic knowledge and growing life skills.

On Tuesday afternoon, six Jeffers Elementary School staff members were recognized for their swift efforts to save the life of one of their students. During the small but impactful recognition ceremony at the Spring Lake Fire Station, Fire Chief John Stalzer honored Kristen Dewitt, Nikki Theune, Konnor French, Marley Fogel, Maddy Nogar and Brenda Ball. They each received Certificates of Merit for their roles in responding to a second-grade student experiencing cardiac arrest several months ago.

The library at Griffin Elementary School received an upgrade on Wednesday through a community partnership that all started with an approximately 60-year-old piece of furniture. Fleetwood Furniture, a Holland-based classroom furniture company, was invited to participate in the elementary school’s STEM Night a few months ago, during which students showed off their projects and got to interact with representatives from local companies in STEM-related fields. kAm(9:=6 96 H2D 2E vC:77:?

At Monday’s work session, the Spring Lake Village Council discussed the upcoming public hearing on amending the Short-Term Rental (SRT) Overlay Zone Map. The revised overlay map, recommended by the village’s Planning Commission during its meeting on March 31, would remove properties on Rex, Monarch and Dixie streets from the overlay zone. If approved by the council, no other properties in the area would be approved for short-term rental use.

Kevin Blanding, Rosy Mound Elementary School’s longtime principal, will be concluding his time working in education at Grand Haven Area Public Schools with his retirement at the end of the school year. Blanding was an educator in California for 18 years before moving back to his home state of Michigan and joining the Grand Haven school district. The last 22 years of his career have been spent as Rosy Mound’s principal, working with staff to help students kick off their education journeys.
