    The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa is set during the 1800s, after the golden age of piracy. The protagonist, Mar, is a teenage transmasculine nonbinary pirate with the secret power to control fire and ice. When Mar turns 16, el Diablo comes to collect his end of a bargain with Mar’s father, the soul of Mar’s father and the rest of the crew. Mar is rescued from drowning during el Diablo’s storm, by another pirate ship.

    For this years adult summer reading challenge at my local library, one of the categories of books to read was “nonfiction history”. So I thought of a book that had been on my list for while but hadn’t gotten around to checking around, Liberated by Kaz Rowe. The author is a YouTuber and I have been subscribed to their channel for some time, so I was of course, intrigued when I heard that they recently published a graphic novel.
