The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa is set during the 1800s, after the golden age of piracy. The protagonist, Mar, is a teenage transmasculine nonbinary pirate with the secret power to control fire and ice. When Mar turns 16, el Diablo comes to collect his end of a bargain with Mar’s father, the soul of Mar’s father and the rest of the crew. Mar is rescued from drowning during el Diablo’s storm, by another pirate ship.

For this years adult summer reading challenge at my local library, one of the categories of books to read was “nonfiction history”. So I thought of a book that had been on my list for while but hadn’t gotten around to checking around, Liberated by Kaz Rowe. The author is a YouTuber and I have been subscribed to their channel for some time, so I was of course, intrigued when I heard that they recently published a graphic novel.

Helluva Boss is an adult animated musical comedy web series, that exists within the same setting as Hazbin Hotel which I reviewed earlier. It follows the IMP (the experienced murder professionals, and yes I know those letters don’t match up), a business of imp assassins who come from Hell to earth the do hits on people. They are able to go to Earth from hell because of a spellbook that the business owner and protagonist, Blitzo, (the o is silent), has an arrangement with the demon prince, Stolas.

This past pride month I was looking to read an LGBTQ+ book with a female protagonist, and I thought A Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy seemed like a great summer read. The summertime always makes me feel more interested in pirates (the romantic idea of them, not the reality). I did skip reading the first book in the series, A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, to read it. As the title suggests, A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue has a male protagonist.

I decided to watch Hazbin Hotel after seeing a lot of hype for it on the internet, especially among people who enjoy tv shows with LGBTQ+ characters. I was particularly intrigued when YouTuber Rowen Ellis mentioned Hazbin Hotel in one of her video essays, one about queercoded villains (posted below). So I decided to finally watch it this past pride month. I immediately fell in love with the show, with the first song, “A Happy Day in Hell”. What can say, I love a good musical number?

This past pride month I finally read The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, an adult cozy fantasy novel with a gay protagonist, which was highly recommended on Goodreads. And I am happy to say, it did not disappoint! As soon as a began the novel I knew that I was in for a good time. The setting which includes magical beings and never mentions any real world locations, was wonderfully whimsical. It reminded me of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Titled Drive-Away Dykes onscreen, Drive-Away Dolls is new crime-comedy film directed by Coen Brother, Ethan Coen. The movie follows Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan, Miracle Workers) and Jamie, a couple of lesbian friends on a roadtrip to visit Marian’s aunt. They discover a suitcase in the trunk of their rental car, which it turns out some very dangerous men are after. They also discover a head in a hatbox. The movie opens to Pedro Pescal being beheaded for the contents of the suitcase.
