Note to readers * Each month I write a newsletter to subscribers. In 2025, we're also sharing it here. I was recently asked how The Salt Lake Tribune is covering the Trump administration. There are journalists working from Washington, D.C., to Palm Beach, Florida, who are charged with keeping track of President Donald Trump. Our job is to build an understanding of impacts here in Utah.

Note to readers * Each month I write a newsletter to subscribers. In 2025, we're also sharing it here. I've updated this letter to reflect recent developments in the Utah Legislature. One of The Salt Lake Tribune's goals is to strengthen journalism statewide. We do this in part through the Utah News Collaborative, a group of 17 news organizations that stretches from Logan to St. George. The Tribune started the collaborative four years ago, but this year we've made a significant investment in it.

UTAH – Just three weeks into the 2025 legislative session, and Utah lawmakers already have introduced bills that would effectively eliminate mail-in voting and make it harder and more expensive for you to put an initiative on a statewide ballot. Utahns will feel the effects of these proposals, and many more, if they move from bills to laws. On our best days, The Salt Lake Tribune shares stories that empower you to make a decision or share your thoughts with those in power.

The Silver King Fire in south-central Utah had burned more than 5,400 acres as of mid-day Sunday, the U.S. Forest Service reported on social media. The blaze is "exhibiting extreme fire behavior," the U.S. Forest Service wrote. Marysvale, a community of roughly 400 people in Piute County, is the closest town to the fire. The fire has continued to progress over the weekend as firefighters battled record high temperatures and winds up to 30 miles per hour.
