The early morning mist is swirling above the aquamarine water of the Chilko River, and I wake before dawn to the sound of a large animal moving swiftly through the water directly below my safari tent. I’m in the Cariboo Chilcotin region of British Columbia, a mountainous wilderness dotted with turquoise lakes and rivers and all but untouched by time. This is grizzly bear country, and the footsteps belong to a large bear who is trolling the riverbank in search of salmon, just 300 feet away from me.
