TODAY, WHEN I feel despair over how long it is taking me to correct for lockdown’s effects on my attention span and general cognition, it helps to remember how much worse I felt during the early days of the pandemic. My average screen time hit six hours per day. At some point in 2020, I lost the ability to read anything but the airport-iest of airport books. I watched all of Queen’s Gambit in one weekend but retained nothing.
