The 1960s marked the beginning of the disability rights movement, with Berkeley at its forefront. Now, six decades later, the Center for Independent Living, or CIL, continues efforts, including the recent Disability Pride celebration and a new executive director, hoping to enhance the disability community through partnerships and engagement. The CIL celebration was held last Wednesday at the Ed Roberts Campus building, a nonprofit formed by multiple disability organizations including CIL.

“Who doesn’t love a good dance floor and some great music?”That's the question general manager Amanda Espinoza proposed when discussing the opening of Cali’s Sports Bar & Kitchen and Club Cali, the new two-story club and bar on Telegraph Avenue that soft launched last Wednesday. According to Espinoza, Cali’s Sports Bar & Kitchen comprises a sports bar with dozens of televisions, a counter service for quick bites and a spacious dining area and outdoor patio.

More than 200 Berkeley community members crowded Wednesday’s BUSD meeting to continue a push to educate students on the Israel-Hamas war in Berkeley high schools and voice the need for increased educator and faculty compensation. Members of the crowd carried signs reading “Berkeley Teachers Fighting for Education,” “BUSD Jewish parents said we stand with our Arab and Muslim students and teachers,” and “Teachers for Palestine” among other slogans.

After being awarded a construction contract in December 2023, the Willard Clubhouse in Berkeley’s Willard Park will undergo a renovation set to start March 11. First established in 1971, the current 565-square-foot clubhouse will expand into a 3,301-square-foot community building that includes a divisible community room, an outdoor plaza, a lobby and a kitchen along with other features, according to the city’s website.
