    New York City loves its Australian brunch. Think bright and bubbly restaurant-cafes like Little Ruby’s, Bluestone Lane and Banter, which serve up a range of refreshing dishes from avocado toast with prosciutto to veggie-filled rice bowls topped with a poached egg. The fare is hard to put a label on — veggie-forward, no doubt, and perhaps even a tad Californian — but for chef Daniel Garwood, Australian food means local ingredient sourcing and diverse culinary influences.

    There are a few things that you’ll immediately notice when you first walk into Kernel. First are the prices — $9 chicken sandwiches and $10 salads almost seem too good to be true. Behind the counter, you’ll see a giant robotic arm enclosed in a metal structure, passing off small portions of food to one of its human coworkers. Complemented by a mint-green brick statement wall, bright orange barstools and millennial pink accents, the restaurant feels equal parts futuristic and trendy.

    On the 102nd floor of the One World Observatory, everything feels a little magical. With 360-degree views of Manhattan and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Observatory would be the ideal venue for the boisterous, food-filled ragers that Food Network’s New York City Wine & Food Festival is known for. But on Oct. 19, the observation deck was filled with children in Halloween costumes, cookie crumbs on the tables and parents trying to snap photos with Duff Goldman.
