AREA — Next week, with half the Senate and Congress up for election, area voters will choose a new Senator to represent New Jersey along with Congressional representatives in the 7th and 10th Congressional Districts. Following the lengthy scandal, trial, conviction and eventual resignation of disgraced longtime Senator Robert Menendez, New Jersey will now choose between Congressman Andy Kim (D) and businessman Curtis Bashaw (R) to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.

GARWOOD — Garwood residents saw a few changes, much discussion, and a year that ended with a dramatic save by the police department. The year started out with the retirement of Police Chief James Wright, who was succeeded by Captain Douglas Stoffer, a Garwood resident. “All of your concerns are also my concerns,” Chief Stoffer told residents upon taking the helm of the department.

MOUNTAINSIDE — Mountainside moved forward with plans for a new park at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and New Providence Road as well as a spending plan to pave multiple roadways in the borough during 2023. Plans for the new park were presented to the council in July by Todd Evans of Beautiful Mountainside. These plans include new matching light fixtures for the entire downtown area and a slate-top, backlit curved sign marking the beginning of the park.

By LAUREN S. BARRFANWOOD – Fanwood’s incumbent mayor and council members won reelection unopposed Tuesday night. Democratic Mayor Colleen Mahr won a sixth four-year term, with 1,430 votes. Council President Jeffrey Banks (1,400) and Councilman Anthony Carter (1,405) won new three-year terms, ensuring the Democrats’ unanimous control of the borough council, which last saw a Republican member a decade ago.
