A prime downtown property will remain a parking lot for the foreseeable future. The Oneonta Common Council voted 5-3 against selling the city-owned property at 27 Market St. to Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc. at its meeting Tuesday, May 6 held at the Oneonta High School auditorium. At least six of the eight council members — a 75% majority — were needed to vote in favor of approving the purchase and sale agreement with RSS.

The Oneonta City School District is proposing a 2.73% tax levy increase for the 2025-2026 budget, as well as the purchase of school buses and minivans. The Board of Education has scheduled a public budget hearing 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 in the Oneonta High School cafeteria. The budget vote is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 20 at Foothills Performing Arts Center. According to information from the school district mailed to residents, the proposed budget is $49,010,056.

The U.S. had 800 measles cases as of Friday, April 18 — a new high in the nationwide outbreak that began three months ago, in which two children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses. In New York state, only one case of measles, in Suffolk County, has been reported outside of New York City, where there have been three confirmed cases this year. Measles begins in the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body, causing high fever, rash and other symptoms.

Earlier this year, Hali Tomczak, a resident of Oneonta's West End, decided that she had had enough with garbage trucks operating on her street in the early morning hours, disrupting her sleep. She spoke with many others in her Morgan Avenue neighborhood, collecting 37 signatures during February and March on a petition to the city asking leaders to amend the city's noise ordinance and enact later start time for garbage trucks.
