Corridor8 Director Lauren Velvick speaks to José Garcia Oliva, a Venezuelan multidisciplinary artist who is based in London and was recently commissioned by Lancaster Arts for the participatory project and exhibition Traces. Oliva’s practice reacts to hidden socio-political oppressions, exposing them through participatory performances or public interventions. The outcome of his work is usually an enactment of social exchanges or provocations shaped by the commons, site-specificity and spontaneity.

It’s been an eventful three years for Corridor8 (and, admittedly, everybody else). In 2020 we launched our Supported Content commissioning model as an experiment in finding ways to ensure fair payment for our writers and ourselves. We didn’t know if it would work, but it did, surprisingly well, and for that we can thank the organisations, curators and artists across the North who’ve chosen to invest financially and share our vision, along with the writers and editors who’ve done the work.

Over a gloriously sunny weekend in June this year the Corridor8 team convened for our away weekend. This semi-annual tradition serves as a way to explore and highlight some of the more remote arts organisations in the North of England, particularly those providing space for residencies and offering spaces for experimentation in other ways of living and being – the theme of many an exhibition over the past few years.
