Skeletal remains found in 1980 were identified as teenager Dorothy Strickland. A funeral director's persistence and a school district employee's observation were key to solving the mystery. The Indian River County Sheriff's Office cold case unit is now reinvestigating Strickland's death. The New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church has stood along U.S. 1 on the south side of 39th Street, Vero Beach, since 1969. The columnist contrasts the excitement for Costco with his own experience of less fanfare at previous store openings, such as the Indian River Mall in 1996. While acknowledging the appeal of certain chains like Central Market in Texas, the columnist expresses a preference for local, family-owned grocery stores. The columnist questions the need to drive long distances or obtain memberships for chain stores, citing contentment with existing local options. Wawa. Aldi. Costco. Who cares?
