Simultaneous kickoffs in group stage finales are probably one of the best things about high level soccer tournaments. The drama it can lead to as fans watch, not only the game their team is playing, but another game that has an impact on their team, is unique. Thursday night in Nashville was no different as Al Hilal was able to advance to the Round of 16 by virtue of their 2-0 win against Pachuca as well as Real Madrid’s win over Red Bull Salzburg in Philadelphia.

The final group to kick off their final group games is Group H. By the time these two games get under way, the teams will know what other teams await them in the knockout rounds, if not exactly which team they will be playing. That’s because three of the four teams in Group H are still able to advance to the Round of 16 and nobody has nailed down that top spot just yet. It should make for both very entertaining soccer and for interesting scoreboard watching.

The South American fans have been the biggest boon to this year’s new and expanded Club World Cup. Fans from Brazil of teams like Flamengo, Palmeiras, Botafogo and from Argentina for River Plate have all made their presence felt. But it has been the Boca Juniors fans from Argentina that have stolen the show thus far. They turned out in droves for two games in Miami (55,574 against Benfica and 63,587 against Bayern Munich). They took over the beaches, the parking lot, and even a Wal-Mart.

One of the best things about high level international soccer tournaments it that the group stage finales feature simultaneous kickoffs, after the Disgrace of Gijon at the 1982 World Cup in Spain where West Germany and Austria colluded to achieve a certain result to ensure the elimination of Algeria.

So far, so good for the USMNT at the Gold Cup. They’ve played two games and won them both. By doing so they’ve secured a spot in the quarterfinals, which is ordinarily not anything to write home about, but just a week ago was looking like a dim proposition after ugly friendly losses to Turkey and Switzerland.
