Hall County School Officials provided updates on the construction of Everwood Elementary School during the Hall County Board of Education's Monday work session. Everwood Elementary School will combine McEver Arts Academy and Oakwood Elementary School for the upcoming school year, as both will shut down at the end of the 2024-25 school year.

A feature film is taking its production to Downtown Gainesville next week. The alley between Bradford St. and Main St. will be transformed into the set of Clean Hands, a film following the true story of narcotics detective turned recovery advocate Kevin Simmers and his daughter Brooke on April 24. The film will star Zack Braff and Esther McGregor as the leading roles of Kevin and his daughter.

A building along Dawsonville Hwy. is considered a total loss following an early Monday morning Commercial Fire in Gainesville. Units from Hall County Fire Rescue and the Gainesville Fire Department responded to the scene on the 2000 block of Dawsonville Hwy. just after 3:30 a.m. Once units arrived, they reportedly discovered that the two-story building was fully involved with flames.

A Gainesville man previously charged with vehicular homicide in a Hall County crash has now been charged with possession of child sexual abuse material. Rafael Garrido, 60, was involved in the March 22 collision on Browns Bridge Rd. that killed two people near S. Smith Rd. His phone had been seized after that accident to be processed for evidence in that case.

Stephens County Jail implements body scanner technology

The Stephens County Jail has implemented new technology to help jailers detect potential incoming contraband. The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post that the jail received the Tek84 Intercept Body Scanner in January of this year and officially implemented the technology into daily operations in late March. The scanner allows jail staff to detect several contraband items including drugs, cell phones and weapons.
