The Trump administration has announced (and delayed, and re-announced, and delayed again) 25-percent tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10-percent tariff on goods from China. Tariffs will make various goods more expensive for U.S. consumers and businesses, and over 40 percent of U.S. imports come from either China, Canada, or Mexico. Moreover, some experts believe that tariffs will shrink the U.S. economy overall.

The incoming Trump administration and Congress have foreshadowed large spending cuts to Medicaid spending as part of an even larger budget bill to fund a major tax cut. Given the complicated budget process, members of Congress may vote on the target for Medicaid spending reductions before specifying policies to meet that target. This process of “numbers first” makes it challenging to appreciate their magnitude.

Jobs numbers from spring and summer 2024 have reflected higher employment rates for prime-working-age women than ever in history. Moms with children under age 5 have been the most rapidly growing segment of the labor force. At the same time, child care prices are rising faster than inflation, child care programs are having trouble hiring and retaining early educators, and, in too many communities, child care programs are closing down.

Health coverage plays a critical role in enabling women to access health care. It can alleviate some of health care’s financial burden and often determines whether or not individuals seek care at all. For example, before the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), nearly half (48 percent) of women ages 19–64 reported delaying medical care due to cost, but this number has dropped by more than 40 percent (to only 28 percent) since the law was enacted.
