The city won the bid to host the event after Switzerland’s act Nemo was victorious last year – triggering a contest between destinations in the country. Basel played up its location – positioned close to the German and French borders, it’s a truly cosmopolitan destination – and its desire to create a city-wide party.

Still less that it would be on the Tideway in London – and we’d be leading them in the tally of victories by 2.5 to 1.5.AdvertisementYet Saturday marked my fourth appearance for Oxford in the Women’s Veterans’ Boat Race. We race, like the Men’s Veterans, from Putney to Furnivall Steps, just past Hammersmith Bridge, a distance of just under 3k.

Salty delightWhat keeps the British away is that it often rains during July and August (although with encroaching climate change, less than it used to). But without that rain, you would not have the lush pastures which cover the high Jurassian plateaus, lovingly showcased in the film. And without that grass to feed the cows, you would not have the nutty, salty delight that is comté cheese.

Our writer returns to the Swiss resort of Chateau d'Oex to find a destination transformed Imagine the scene: it's 1987, and a group of private school girls are off on a school ski trip. On the plane are some Wrexham comprehensive school boys. Casuals, in fact: their hair is longer than ours and their fringes flickier than Princess Diana's. But it turns out (to our horror) we're all on the way to the same ski resort - Chateau d'Oex in the Pays D'Enhaut in Switzerland.
