There is absolutely no doubting Rory McIlroy is among the favourites to win the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow this week but Smylie Kaufman has pinpointed one potential issue for the Northern Irishman. McIlroy’s 2025 could not be going much better really. He’s won multiple events, finally won The Masters, and is playing with a freedom and confidence we’ve not seen since his early years. For McIlroy, the key now is to kick on and win more majors.

If you’re Justin Thomas right now, you will have firm eyes on winning a third PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and adding yet more silverware to the cabinet. Thomas’ resurgence in 2025 has been a joy to witness at times. Three runner up spots and a win at the RBC Heritage have propelled him back into people’s thoughts for most big events. Indeed, with a Ryder Cup coming too, Thomas appears to be a lock to make the final 12 on current form.

Justin Thomas might be in fine form himself right now but even he has admitted he’d take an element of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler’s game if he could. Thomas won the RBC Heritage to get back to the winner’s circle recently and ahead of the PGA Championship, he’s among many people’s favourites to win. The American has won the PGA twice before, including in 2017 at Quail Hollow, and he will be desperate to kick on again.
