Galway marched into Pairc Esler as heavy favourites in Sunday’s preliminary Quarter-Final and, although they did escape with a victory, anyone who thought this was going to be one way traffic doesn’t know the work that Down have put into their preparation over the past few years.

Tyrone youngster Ciaran Daly is relishing the competition for places in the team and understands that he can’t allow his standards to drop, particularly in this group of players. The Red Hand County finished top of their All-Ireland group, have a week off to recover from last weekend’s win against Cavan and can quietly prepare for a Quarter-Final showdown in Croke Park, so it’s fair to say that they are in a very good position.

At that stage, Armagh and Tyrone hadn’t even lifted the Sam Maguire Cup, while the likes of Derry and Donegal had only one each, both of which were secured in the two previous years of ’93 and ’92.
