The new tariffs specifically target green goods, most notably electric vehicles, duties on which have now quadrupled to 100 percent. There’s an old saying that when the other guy is destroying himself, the best tactic is to stand back and let it happen.     The Republican grand strategy, quite apart from Trump’s efforts to become dictator, has been to push issues that are at oddswith the views of most voters, and then prevail by destroying democracy. They have done this via voter suppression, extreme gerrymandering, rigging courts, having red-state governors countermand the preferences of citizens in blue cities, and by restricting reproductive rights. But that strategy may have just reached its limits.

    In many ways, the SupremeCourt’s ruling upholding the right of a Colorado web designer to refuse to do business with a same-sex couple is the most insidious of the Roberts Court’s recent string of far-right decisions overturning protections for minorities. Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for a 6-3 Court, framed the case as being entirely about free speech—in this case the freedom of the web designer, Lorie Smith, not to tacitly support same-sex marriage.
