We’re thrilled to share an excerpt from Lee Mandelo’s The Woods All Black—a novel equal parts historical horror, trans romance, and blood-soaked revenge, all set in 1920s Appalachia—out from Tordotcom Publishing on March 19. Leslie Bruin is assigned to the backwoods township of Spar Creek by the Frontier Nursing Service, under its usual mandate: vaccinate the flock, birth babies, and weather the judgements of churchy locals who look at him and see a failed woman.

For the penultimate post of our ten-year retrospective, I thought I’d recommend something fresh… which also happens to (sorta-retrospectively!) cover a genre I don’t often tackle: Scream, Queen!, the horror film podcast. With the finale for season two coming up, this podcast has cemented itself as a hands-down favorite for me, because I too was a weird kid who cut their teeth on horror VHS tapes smuggled out of the Blockbuster or binged at friends’ houses.

Welcome back for the second installment of Queering SFF’s Big Gay Pride Month Recommendation List(s), for getting our vibes right via arts and entertainment. Last week I gathered four weird and sexy books for summer reading, and this week we’re talking television—specifically, because it’s been giving me life over the last eighteen months, the vibrant LGBTQ+ media scene coming out of Thailand. If you’re newly dipping your toes into transnational queer media, consider this a starter package.

Updates2023 UpdatesThree big updates going into 2023! The first, I'm now represented by Kate McKean of Morhaim Literary. The second, Uncanny Magazine will soon be publishing a novelette from yours-truly entitled “Anything with a Void at the Center.” It’s the one I've been describing as the “haunted porn theater (or, what are boyfriends anyway)” story!!The third, it's exactly two months until the release of 'Feed Them Silence,' my near-future queer sf novella from Tordotcom.
