There is nothing like scarcity to fuel the imagination. A leather shortage in the years following World War II compelled Guccio Gucci, founder of the Florentine brand, to look elsewhere for materials. He turned to his son’s bamboo walking sticks; imports of bamboo from Japan were plentiful at the time, and it helped that it was so lightweight and durable. Gucci’s artisans soon patented a handcrafted process for heating, bending, and glossing the wood for use as bag handles and closures.

Jim Manley was 10 when he first fell in love with the American West. And it wasn’t because he was on a dude ranch somewhere out in Montana or Wyoming or Colorado.
