Federation of Nurses/UFT members at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn on Feb. 26 overwhelmingly ratified a contract that provides a 15.8% raise compounded over two years and includes new commitments from the hospital to address the chronic shortage of nurses. The agreement followed weeks of contentious negotiations that brought them to the brink of a strike. The union had filed a strike notice on Feb. 18, 10 days before the contract was due to expire.

VNS Health nurses OK contract

Federation of Nurses/UFT members who are licensed practical nurses with VNS Health overwhelmingly ratified a contract on Jan. 27 that provides a 7.5% increase in base pay over two years while establishing the employer’s contractual obligation to consider factors like parking availability, travel time and level of patient need when scheduling daily caseloads.
New telehealth benefit

The UFT has created a new telehealth benefit for members who are not eligible for city health insurance. UFT members who are substitute paraprofessionals, per-diem teachers and members of the union’s ADAPT Community Network chapters can now access virtual medical care through the AllyHealth Telemedicine Program. The benefit is also being made available to UFT members in the Family Child Care Providers Chapter.

Your optical benefits entitle you to one pair of eyeglasses and an accompanying eye exam, or to contact lenses. Prescription sunglasses are also covered. To receive reimbursement for both your eye exam and your eyeglasses, you need to obtain both services at the same time and location.

UFT Welfare Fund members, both in-service and retired, and their families now have special access to Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) thanks to a new partnership between the UFT Welfare Fund and the hospital. The new program, called HSS Perform, includes HSS Care Concierge, a dedicated team to answer members’ questions and help them explore options for treatment at the hospital.

This summer, the union launched Childcare Connection, a benefit to help UFT members find out if they qualify for free or reduced-cost child care as well as to find home-based child care providers near their home or work. UFT members now have access to an online tool that streamlines the often frustrating process of finding and applying for programs that can help offset the cost of child care.

In the coming school year, the UFT plans to keep up the fight to secure appropriate pay and health benefits for long-term substitute teachers. A substitute teacher who begins a term teaching in a vacant position, or who begins in the middle of the term and performs the role of a regular classroom teacher for two months or more, should be recoded as Q-status, the payroll category that pays a sub at the rate of a first-year teacher and confers health benefits.
