It wasn’t your traditional publishing party, but the new authors were very excited just the same. Students in the transitional kindergarten class at the Ocean Breeze School at St. Stephen’s Church celebrated their first book, “Seagull Adventures,” with a read-aloud, themed snacks and crafts. “There was a bear at the beach, and the seagulls landed on the bear,” read Owen, as his friends gathered around in a circle.

The Marblehead Town Charter Committee, appointed by the Select Board in April 2024, is tasked with researching, developing and proposing Marblehead’s first charter for the community’s consideration. While respecting Marblehead traditions and long-standing practices, this charter will clearly define the roles, responsibilities and powers of various town officials and boards. This will lead to greater clarity, efficiency and accountability within Marblehead’s town government.

The League of Women Voters of Marblehead will hold its annual Candidates’ Night Tuesday, May 20, 7 p.m. at the Marblehead High School library. Attendees are welcome to come at 6:30 p.m. meet candidates who are there. Marblehead’s municipal election is June 10. This year there are six contested races: Select Board, Cemetery Commission, Board of Health, Town Clerk, Planning Board and School Committee. LWV Marblehead has an “empty chair” bylaw that applies to local elections.

Volunteers are busy preparing for the 59th Marblehead Festival of Arts July 3-6. They’re also launching their biggest fundraising campaign ever. “We hope to raise $200,000 by July 3 to keep the Festival operating this year and to help continue the Festival for many more years to come,” said MFoA Board member Joe Taverna. The MFoA earns about $110,000 each year in revenue from exhibit sales and the Cods & Whales event.
