Meetings of three major United Nations chemical conventions wrapped last week, with an agreement for new global restrictions on three persistent organic pollutants (POPs)-chlorpyrifos, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins, and long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids. But some members of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions are unhappy with what they call a long list of exemptions to the bans.

The US Environmental Protection Agency on May 2 announced its anticipated reorganization plan, which includes a new Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions (OASES). The agency did not give details on what this office will focus on, nor did it mention the existing EPA research body, the Office of Research and Development (ORD), in the announcement.

The US National Science Foundation announced the winners of its prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award earlier this month. In a typical year, the NSF awards around 2,000 students a fellowship, which provides 3 years' worth of financial support for their doctoral or master's studies. But this April, the NSF granted only 1,000 awards.

In the latest potential shake-up to the federal workforce, the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released a proposed rule (PDF) April 18 that would reclassify around 50,000 federal employees and allow agencies to more easily fire those involved in policy creation who do not obey presidential directives.
