(The child in question was lying face down on the swing rather than sitting on it.) You can say “I don’t think that’s a good idea” or “Stop that right now,” when you check in every once in a while and something really crazy is going on, like throwing sand at other children’s heads or tying ropes around their necks.

Yesterday in The School for Housewives’ paid subscriber chat we had some good conversations about finances, worries about having more babies (but being brave!), and a few other topics. One of them touched on religious scrupulosity in children. That’s a problem with many facets; parents aim to strike a balance of teaching, observing, having standards, but also not stressing children out about the faith or right conduct.

The oddest thing not to insist your children do

If you know the weather will change later, or you have a certain function to attend, or your child will need to have a certain kind of shoe to participate (sneakers vs. sandals, for instance), you need to insist that your child do what is appropriate — that he obey you. You are the one with the knowledge and experience of how conditions can change. You are the one who knows what form of dress is required for which occasion.

One effect of eliminating the possibility of screens is realizing how much they can and want to do!Of course, looking at and reading books is a whole enchanting world we don’t want them to miss, but we might be out of the habit of this enjoyment.
