As The Harvard Crimson reported toward the end of last month, the director and associate director of Harvard University’s interdisciplinary Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) were summarily ousted from their positions midterm. Cemal Kafadar, a scholar of the Ottoman Empire and member of Harvard’s Turkish-studies department, and Rosie Bsheer, a historian of Saudi Arabia, were dismissed by interim social-science dean David M.
