Last week, my colleague Evan Goldstein and I talked with three legal experts — Michael C. Dorf, of Cornell Law; Cristina M. Rodríguez, of Yale Law; and Ilya Shapiro, of the Manhattan Institute — about how Harvard’s lawsuit against the Trump administration is likely to play out. The showdown between President Trump and Harvard involves a very wide range of legal issues: immigration law, tax law, and antidiscrimination law, to name a few.

Can he do that? That’s the question observers of higher education have been asking, over and over again, about President Donald J. Trump’s actions toward the sector during his second term. Enormous quantities of money withheld without process. Student visas revoked, sometimes en masse. Green-card holders detained and targeted for deportation, apparently for nothing more than speech.

Last month, an Indian national and Georgetown postdoc named Badar Khan Suri was apprehended by immigration officials outside of his Virginia home and taken to a detention facility in Texas, where he remains.

The best movie I’ve seen this year is Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, a political drama about the state repression of the thousands of Iranians who took to the streets of Tehran and elsewhere in protest of the death of Mahsa Amini, murdered by religious police for not wearing a hijab.
