It was the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific War, and its bloodiest battle, particularly for 450,000 civilians on the long narrow, hilly isle. A quarter of the inhabitants would die in the course of intense combat and heavy bombardment from hundreds of Navy ships and aircraft.

    Crap flows downhill. It’s an old saying that generally uses a more profane four-letter word. In the case of state and local budgets being debated now, the turmoil down the road in Washington – firings, agency closings, canceled contracts, program cuts – have negative and unpredictable consequences downhill in Annapolis and Ellicott City. There’s no avoiding the consequences of the past election these days. For Maryland, it’s even worse than speculated here in December’s post-election column.

    Dan Rupli, a lawyer, congressional candidate, civil rights enforcer and progressive activist, died Thursday at 82 from a fall and complications of dementia. Dan first came to prominence in 1976 when he mounted a liberal challenge to Rep. Goodloe Byron in the 6th Congressional District, a conservative Democrat Rupli came close to defeating in the primary.
