Why the hell would we go out on a limb to predict who's going to win in the top Grammy categories when we've been famously, ridiculously wrong so many times and Grammys gonna Grammy™ anyway? Mainly because we're stir crazy and need something new for the website, but also because, hey, it's the End Times, so why not? Besides, nobody remembers anybody's predictions, and it's already widely known that we're idiots. And with those caveats out of the way, let's get on with the prognostication.

This time out, Grammy accomplished its most important task: It rewarded some of the most essential artists and recordings of the last year in the top categories. As is always the case-because Grammys Gonna Grammy™-there were some questionable omissions and a few typically left-field choices. But by our reckoning, the top 2025 noms were about 80% on the money.

FURTHER RUMINATIONS ON BEST NEW ARTIST

As we've previously noted, there is no Grammy category in which Grammys Gonna Grammy like BNA. This year's crop of possible nominees, in any case, is no mere tastemaker playlist. In fact, most of the artists below have already shown muscle in the marketplace and established themselves with audiences as real acts, not just songs. Quite a few of the artists listed here are likely to get nominated in other categories-and a few could well be contenders for Record, Song or even Album of the Year.

As we attempt to reorganize our boiling brains after a disorienting midweek 4th of July holiday and prepare to plunge headlong into Grammy mania, one thing is abundantly clear: White donut peaches have hit the market and are absolutely delightful. Rainier cherries are bursting with robust, juicy flavor and (as was pointed out by my partner, Dennis) watermelon is full-bodied and dazzlingly sweet. What's more, summer corn is close to the sun-kissed perfection typically reserved for August.

Yes, it is getting exciting again to be a music consumer. After a nearly three-year pandemic period that caused isolation, loneliness and desperation, the confluence of live performance, communal behavior and exciting releases has energized the music space across the board.
