Written and Illustrated by Steven CuzorBased on the novel by Stephen CranePublished by Abrams ComicArtsDo we really need another adaptation of this classic novel? I remember seeing one when I was a kid by Classics Illustrated and a quick Google search shows me that there have been other adaptations as well. Having already read the book in high school, I wasn’t sure that I would enjoy this at all. I already knew the story and there didn’t seem to be much you could add to it.

StudiosSo let us get this out of the way immediately: This graphic novel features the best artwork that Lee Bermejo has ever done and that is saying something. Anytime Bermejo is on a project that is more than just covers (his covers are AMAZING) it is an event and a cause for celebration. That certainly is the case here. Bermejo goes through MANY different art styles here and he excels at all of them.

Written by Christopher Condon Based on the novel by Barry GiffordArt by Brian Level, Alexandre Tefenkgi, Artyom Topilin, Marco FinneganPublished by Oni PressI enjoy a lot of Barry Gifford’s writing. I loved his work with David Lynch, first with Wild At Heart and then Lost Highway. There is a very particular style that he has with his work that I find interesting and appealing. It may not be for everyone, but I quite like the weirdness in his work.

Written and Illustrated by Josh NeufeldPublished by Pantheon Graphic LibraryI have to say, this is truly a remarkable piece of work. The writer and artist Josh Neufeld does a hell of a job on this, and the documentary nature of this work is exemplary. This work was originally published as a web comic on the defunct online magazine called Smith. It is a comic that explores what happened to six different individuals in New Orleans in the days before Hurricane Katrina.

Written by Tom KingArt by Bilquis EvelyPublished by Dark Horse ComicsI have to say this for writer Tom King: he really likes to try to stretch himself. Every time I pick up a book that he’s written, I never know what to expect. This book here is no different. This time, King looks towards some of the old Conan and Red Sonja comic books for inspiration. He decides to take it into new direction of course because that’s what he does.
