1 INTRODUCTION Habitat loss is widely considered the most important factor leading to species loss (Díaz et al., 2019; Fahrig, 2003; Watling et al., 2020). However, the effects of habitat fragmentation independent of the effects of habitat loss (“fragmentation per se”) are still debated (Fahrig et al., 2019; Fletcher et al., 2018). Metapopulation theory (Hanski, 1994; Levins, 1969) has had a deep impact on researchers' understanding of the effects of fragmentation on species.
