J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) shares ticked close to 2% higher after it was revealed the supermarket had made its largest market share gain in nearly three decades over the last quarter.
UK market share for the country’s second-largest supermarket rose from 14.8% in 2023 to 15.3% in the quarter to August 4, marking its largest leap since 1997 and keeping it on track to be the fastest-growing traditional supermarket.

Wall Street rebounds after Monday's selloff
Uber up 9.5% on earnings
US stocks bounced back from a three-day rout in the early afternoon on Tuesday.
The Nasdaq added 1.7% at 16,475 points, the S&P 500 was up 1.6% at 5,271 points and the Dow Jones added 1.2% at 39,150 points.
Major movers included Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER, ETR:UT8) and Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT), which both added more than 9% on better-than-expected quarterly earnings reports.

Just Eat Takeaway.com NV (LSE:JET, NASDAQ:GRUB) shares have jumped more than 10% after it reported earnings ahead of expectations, but analysts have said performance is likely to remain in line with the market.
The takeaway delivery group achieved an adjusted EBITDA of €203 million, marking a 42% increase and coming in 6.2% ahead of estimates by Deutsche Bank analysts.

J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) boss Simon Roberts has joined a growing list of business leaders who are calling for the closure of a tax loophole that benefits foreign e-commerce retailers.
Under current tax rules, consumers can make orders worth less than £135 online from overseas sellers and not have to pay customs duty, providing direct boosts to companies like fashion giant Shein.
Over in the EU, a similar rule applies albeit at a €150 threshold.

Shares in Carnival PLC (LSE:CCL, NYSE:CCL), the owner of cruise companies such as P&O, rallied over 7% after it upgraded full-year profit guidance on the back of a strong second quarter.
Fueled by higher prices and robust demand for its cruise holidays in places such as the Caribbean and Alaska, the FTSE 250-listed group lifted its adjusted net income guidance by around US$275 million and its net yield guidance to 10.25% from the 9.5% indications it gave in March.
