IntroductionFamilies with low socioeconomic status often do not seek preventative health care. Some families may lack awareness of the importance of obtaining preventative care, allowing many asymptomatic disorders to remain undiagnosed and untreated with eventual poor outcomes. Others may believe that if there are no symptoms then no health care problem exists and there is no need to see a physician for “no apparent reason” when they might lose income if they have to take time off from work.

IntroductionBeing intensely involved in the article by Lee et al in this issue brought back my childhood memories, growing up in a family of eight in one of the worst New York City housing projects. Seeking health care for my family and immediate neighbors was almost always for acute medical issues, never about preventive care. Our experience in obtaining medical care was either in an emergency room or a typical 3- to 4-hour wait in a hospital or health care clinic.

IntroductionEven with more women becoming physicians there remain several medical specialties, including ophthalmology, that are dominated by men. What is remarkable is the growing number of female pediatric ophthalmologists. In this issue, Hucko et al have reported that as of 2020, slightly more than half of all pediatric ophthalmologists are women.
