CHARLESTON, Mo. A 14-year-old male is in custody after a firearm was discharged Tuesday, March 26 at the Charleston High School football field. According to Chareston Department of Public Safety Director Robert E. Hearnes, at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, his agency was notified a student had fired a gun at the Charleston High School football field. Responding officers were able to take the suspect into custody without incident, and the firearm a handgun was found nearby, he said.

SIKESTON — Local high school students chewed on the challenges of living with a financial budget when they participated in the Bite of Reality program this week at Three Rivers College’s campus in Sikeston. Nearly 140 Sikeston High School students enrolled in personal finance classes participated in the program Wednesday, Sept. 20 while about 100 students from Kelly High School and Scott County Central High School participated in the program Tuesday, Sept. 19.

SIKESTON — The 16 period-style light posts for the Sikeston Honors Veterans Banner Project have been installed, and now organizers are accepting veteran applications through Oct. 16. The Sikeston Convention and Visitors Bureau; Sikeston Parks and Recreation; and Sikeston Veterans Park Committee is offering the public an opportunity to honor a veteran or someone currently active in the military from the Sikeston area.

SIKESTON — The 2023-2024 tuition rate for Sikeston Public Schools will remain the same rate it has been for the past couple years. During their regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Central Office, Sikeston R-6 Board of Education members approved the recommended tuition rate of $8,250 for the current school year. “That is the amount our tuition has been for the last few years,” Cheryl Essner, R-6 director of finance, told the Board. “You’ll remember, a few years ago, we went up pretty significantly.

Lilly Bone, a 2023 Sikeston High School graduate, was recognized by the Sikeston R-6 Board of Education Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, for placing second in the VFW’s national 2023 Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest over the summer. Bone was awarded a $7,500 scholarship for placing second in the national competition. She previously won first place in the Sikeston VFW’s Patriotic Contest and she also won first place in the Missouri VFW Patriotic Contest.
