A puncture on Royal Rally of Scandinavia’s opening day of action cost Jon Armstrong and Shane Byrne a top result on their latest European Rally Championship round. The Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy crew posted a fastest time on stage five, Gronlund, showing the same speed displayed on Thursday’s Qualifying Stage when they secured good road position thanks to setting a joint-third-fastest time.

Mention the name Subaru here in Ireland, and thoughts for many turn to rallying. Subaru won a number of World Rally Championships and I can recall when the series visited our shores with Rally Ireland, I was amazed at the number of road going Subarus I witnessed. Of course, Subarus played a major part in Irish rallying and at one stage there were more competitive versions in Ireland than any other nation.

The Galway Motor Club has announced the postponement of the 2025 Galway International Rally which was due to take place on 1st-2nd of February. The decision was taken after consultation with Motorsport Ireland following significant infrastructural damage caused by Storm Eowyn along the rally route.

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver Josh McErlean has achieved a career milestone by securing an impressive seventh overall at Rallye Monte Carlo [23-26 January] in his M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 debut in the FIA World Rally Championship. Stepping into the WRC’s premier category, the 25-year-old from Kilrea returned a stellar performance, and along with fellow Academy member co-driver Eoin Treacy, upheld M-Sport honours.

Not only weeks and months have passed, but quite some time since I last got behind the wheel of a Qashqai, one of the most popular vehicles in the Nissan range. Bringing the story right up to date though, I spent a week with an e-POWER version recently and the key to the unique and innovative powertrain is that the wheels are only ever driven directly by an electric motor, unlike traditional hybrids, helping the car deliver the sensation of driving an EV with no need to plug in and charge.

BMW M Motorsport works driver Dan Harper has enjoyed a perfect start to his 2025 race season, playing a starring role in an emphatic victory in the Dubai 24 Hours for Al Manar Racing by Team WRT. The Northern Irishman secured his first ever overall 24-hour race win after a tremendous performance alongside team-mates Max Hesse, Darren Leung, Ben Tuck and Al Faisal Al Zubair in Dubai, with the quintet beating a hugely competitive entry in the Middle Eastern enduro.
