Several weeks ago a South African delegation attempted to defend the country before an ill-informed Donald Trump who, unsurprisingly, refused to be led by facts. Among the many issues raised, the delegation cited crime as one of SA's  biggest problems. However, what was painfully absent from their presentation was a nuanced picture of how crime in SA is not faceless. Crime has a face. And often, that face is Black, poor, and female.

Today, civil society – led by Women for Change – will gather at the Union Buildings to demand that President Cyril Ramaphosa declare gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide a national disaster. This is not just another demonstration. It is a culmination of years of tireless work. It is enough to say: enough is enough. Women and vulnerable groups are tired. The situation is scary.
