Don't you hate wine snobs? By snob I mean someone that turns their nose up at a wine because it doesn’t fit their narrow view of what a wine should taste like, or when and how it should be served. I hate them mostly because I suspect I used to be one. Writing this column has forced me to relax about wine and to open my mind. I hated natural wine at first because all I could see were ‘faults’ such as volatile acidity (vinegar aromas) or brett (barnyard aromas).

Summertime. Don’t mind those meteorologists that tell you summer starts in June. In Ireland it starts on Bealtaine, May 1, or at worst, on the May Bank Holiday Weekend. Bealtaine marks the end of spring and the start of summer, and traditionally involved bonfires, fertility rituals, dancing and craic. In the wine world, if you get good weather in May, and especially around the bank holiday, it is also the start of rosé season.

I’ve written before about my hometown of Athlone and complained a lot about how it turns its back on the Shannon, its best feature. But I can’t change the fact that I feel at home there, it is part of me, so no more complaining today. I can’t claim to be a part of Athlone, however, not since my mother died in 2014. My only connection is her (and my father’s) grave in Cornamagh cemetery which is where I placed a colourful planter on Mother’s Day this year.

Easter, roast lamb, and red wine is the classic springtime trifecta. But which red wine? In previous Easter columns I’ve suggested wines from typical lamb rearing regions such as Bordeaux, New Zealand, and of course Rioja and Ribera, but this year I’m suggesting malbec. Ireland has strong connections with Argentina and they could do with a few of our euro while they attempt to kickstart their economy under their new president.
