    Tonight is the second and last virtual public meeting on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Impact Statement on Enbridge’s proposed tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac to hold Line 5. President Donald Trump ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to fast-track the tunnel proposal under his declared “energy emergency.” The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) draft by the Corps has been criticized as ignoring all the impacts that tunneling under the Straits of Mackinac could cause.

    Conservation agencies and volunteers are out in jack pine forests in parts of the U.S. and Canada, searching for and counting a particular kind of bird, the Kirtland’s warbler. At 5:45 a.m. I met up with a couple of Michigan Department of Natural Resources experts at a GPS coordinate, because one of the roads at the rural intersection was unnamed.

    Aquatic invasive organisms and plants can be spread from lake to lake by boats. Moving firewood can result in moving insect pests or fungal diseases that damage or kill trees. Off-roading on Michigan's trail systems should be followed up by a stop at a car wash. Even hiking can result in spreading invasive insects or plant seeds. A lot of people are spending a lot of time outdoors at this point in the year. The wildfire smoke right now is putting a bit of a damper on that.

    Nearly a year ago, plans to turn some not-terribly-productive farmland into a wetland were announced as a pilot project. Now, deep-rooted grasses and plants friendly to bees and butterflies are beginning to make the 300 acres look lush. Yet to be determined is how well this will capture nutrient runoff from farm fields in the headwaters of the River Raisin watershed.
