Shane Cooper, born 28 May 1985, is a bassist, composer, and producer whose debut album Oscillations (2013) won Best Jazz Album at the 2014 South African Music Awards (SAMAs). As the 2013 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Cooper has performed with the likes of Louis Moholo and Afrika Mkhize. Under his electronic alias Card On Spokes, he has shared stages with Little Dragon and Daedelus, with notable features on BBC Radio and Boiler Room.

Justice Mukheli is a South African filmmaker, photographer, and creative entrepreneur whose career includes directing and showing his work at the 2019 Also Known As Africa art fair in Paris. Born in Soweto, Mukheli’s Venda heritage informs his storytelling, which took off in 2010 with personal photo projects. A gifted Canon camera sparked his mission to challenge stereotypes and reframe Black South African narratives.

It’s been 30 years since South Africa entered democracy and legislatively ended the apartheid regime. New language accompanied the entering into this new territory, named the Rainbow Nation. Within it lay multiracial schools, ubuntu, born frees and coconuts that served as a bridge to reconciliation. The last ten years (marked by the Fees Must Fall movement in 2015) unveiled how narrative building overrode what should’ve been nation-building.

I recently caught up with the founder and head designer of Siyababa Atelier, Siyabonga Mtshali. In the fancy foyer of his Braamfontein atelier, even the doorman remarked on the maverick’s magnetism. Glamorously clad in an audacious fur, Zulu leopard vest, leather pants and kinky accessories, Mtshali led me up to his top floor space as if he were daring me and I was so here for it.

On the 27th of July, The Keleketla Media Arts Project launched their latest publication, Wondering Hand(s) and Spirited Ink: Snapshots into the Black Public Humanities (2024) at their Troyeville location. For years Keleketla! has been an indelible symbol of resilience and communal spirit and it was a great delight to be invited to their commercial site, propped up by years of solid relationships.
