BALTIMORE, Md. – Danfoss Drives’ Hannes Leichtfried has been elected to serve on the National Electrical Manufacturers Association’s (NEMA) board of governors. NEMA announced the election of three new board members and three new officers on November 13, following its 2024 Annual Meeting. Leichtfried, an industry veteran and current vice president of sales and marketing for Danfoss Drives in North America, brings nearly 30 years of experience in electrification to the position.

Both variable frequency drives (VFDs) and variable speed drives (VSDs) are common terms used in the pump industry. A VFD and VSD both vary the speed of a pump, and they can sometimes be used in reference to the same technology but are other times used to refer to different technologies. Confusing, right?

Most of my time over 40 years of working with pumps has been with industrial pumps in water and wastewater plants, refineries, power generation plants, paper mills, chemical plants, etc. But occasionally, in my free time, I have been asked by my friends or neighbors to look into issues with hydraulics in a much different world—their own homes. These have included cases such as vibrating pipes keeping neighbors awake or a drinking water pump on a private boat failing suddenly.

Nelik responds to reader answers. Having received several comments on my March column’s garden watering water metering puzzle, I would like to share two such comments from our readers. I had prepared a solution write-up, but instead I will use these emails, as they beat my planned follow-up: BRIAN: Interesting situation. There could be a couple of items going on here. One could just be “flowing-induced” vibration causing the house meter to jiggle and show a false flow.

In January 2010, I published an article in Pumps & Systems predicting the development of the Middle East pumping systems evolution over time. The Middle East presents a great potential for many kinds of technology applications, of which pumping is one of the most natural. Water and energy were, are and will continue to be two of the most basic needs of humanity.

Can you find the answer to this mini quiz? A residential home had a nice garden with a new watering system recently added by a contractor. The main water (at 60 pounds per square inch gauge [psig]) supply pipe comes from under the ground, as shown in Image 1 (on the right). The water can go to the right (to the house) and/or to the left and under the ground, coming out further to the garden watering control valve system, which is also shown in Image 1 (at the corner of the property).
