The competition has begun in Las Vegas. Rookie minicamp saw a host of tryout players and from the looks of it most of them seem to have earned a spot on the offseason roster. The team announced the addition of six tryout players along with corresponding moves of waived/released players to clear way for them. The only player they signed who has NFL experience is Jaylon Smith who is an eight-year NFL veteran who has played with the Cowboys, Giants, Packers, and one game with the Raiders back in 2023.

With a linebacking corps as thin as the Raiders, taking just one in the draft was not going to be enough. They were bound to add some depth and competition at the position. Today they did just that, signing former Cowboys and Giants linebacker Jaylon Smith. Originally a second round pick by the Cowboys in the 2016 draft, Smith had a few very good seasons in Dallas, including a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2019. We're a long way from that now, of course, and Smith will turn 30 in June.

Derek Carr's career is over. Two years after the Raiders released him, and he signed with the Saints, he is calling it quits. The Saints announced the move Saturday. Just prior to April's draft, it was revealed that Carr had a shoulder injury that could require surgery and, if he opted for surgery, it would likely cost him the 2025 season. The Saints went on to draft Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick in the draft -- four picks below where the Raiders had selected Carr some 11 years ago.

Just ahead of rookie minicamp, the Raiders have gotten all of their rookie class under contract. They got eight of them on Thursday and finished up with the other three Friday morning. The signing of WR Jack Bech completes it. Bech was selected at 58 overall early in the second round out of TCU. The Raiders traded down twice before taking Bech. In the process they added two picks in the third and moved up from the fifth to the fourth round.
