A 64-year-old woman who was attending Cattle Country Festival in Gonzales died from what is believed to have been a possible heart attack Friday, April 11. The female, whose name had not been released, was brought to the medical area for assistance by a male companion on Friday evening when she collapsed. First responders on scene immediately began emergency protocols and an ambulance on site transported the woman to Gonzales Memorial Hospital’s emergency room.

The Smiley City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday, April 9, during a special called meeting to sell the land on FM 108 where the Smiley Fire Station sits to Gonzales County Emergency Services District No. 2, which oversees operations and funding for the six fire departments in the county. ESD 2 is working to combine the Nixon Fire and Rescue with the Smiley Fire Department into a single entity — Gonzales County Fire South — which would have jurisdiction over the entire southern quarter of the county.

The city of Gonzales will receive $2,999,400 in Texas General Land Office (GLO) regional mitigation funds to install a pair of detention basins to reduce the impact, intensity and frequency of flooding on Tinsley Creek. GLO Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced the award on Wednesday, April 2, as part of $58.3 million awarded to counties and municipalities to improve roads, water detention, drainage, and sewer systems.
