AUGUSTA, GEORGIA | Tiger Woods was one of the first professionals to reach out to Ángel Cabrera when the Argentinian returned to the Masters this year for the first time since 2019. As is well known, Cabrera, who won the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters, had been in prison between 2021 and 2023 for domestic abuse. “Tiger’s reaction meant a lot to him,” said Cabrera’s elder son, Federico, who was among a contingent watching Ángel practice at Augusta National on Wednesday.

Practically every golfing region boasts a women’s professional tour. America’s LPGA Tour has been on the go since 1950, the Japanese and Korean circuits since the late 1960s and ’70s, respectively, and the Ladies European Tour since 1978. The LET celebrated its 45th anniversary last year, and its founding members met up earlier this month at England’s Thorpeness Golf Club, where Christine Langford, a former LET chairman and three-time winner on the tour, is the golf director.

The Himalayas, as the St Andrews Ladies’ Putting Club is known the world over, was designed by Old Tom Morris, a four-time winner of the Open and “keeper of the green” in St Andrews from 1864 to 1904. It was in 1867, the same year he won the fourth of those Opens, that Old Tom put the finishing touches to the first and easier nine holes of this famous putting surface. The scary ups and downs of the additional 18 holes (there are 27 in total) were to follow.
