A man found dead near a parade of shops in a town centre suffered a fatal head injury, an inquest was told. Darren Moss, 59, was discovered by police in an alleyway close to The Rows, in Harlow, Essex, at about 21:15 GMT on 18 December. Three men - aged 43, 44 and 61 - were arrested on suspicion of his murder and released on bail until March. A brief hearing, at Essex Coroner's Court, heard Mr Moss suffered fatal injuries to his head and face.

Keepers at a zoo in Essex have counted every tiger, monkey and seal as part of an annual stock take. Colchester Zoo updates its records at the end of each year to keep track of births, deaths and exchanges with other zoos. The numbers for 2024 showed the park was home to 152 unique species, of which 29 were either endangered or critically endangered. "Counting animals may seem like a simple job however, some of the smaller creatures can make the task a little tricky," the zoo said.

The Chief Constable of Essex Police has told the BBC he will have to make difficult decisions if the force continues to be "unfairly funded". Ben-Julian Harrington said financial pressure was making it harder for him to retain officers and "keep Essex safe". The force's £363.7m budget is £40m below what Merseyside Police is granted, despite covering an area that is five times greater in size.
