    The weather has not cooperated with Johnson County School schedules this academic year. Between the effects of Hurricane Helene, frequent snows, and the severe cold of January, many classes and schedules have been rearranged and then rearranged again. The Johnson County Center for the Arts’ after-school program, called Pathways, has worked hard to adapt to these changes.

    I love wintertime, especially when it snows. I can’t think of anything more fun than building a snowman, sled riding, taking walks in the white stuff, or just watching the snow fall. I’ll admit there are a lot of days during the winter when it is just cold and wet, and it seems like it gets dark too early, but that is a great time to do an art or craft project.

    Fall classes are wrapping up at the Johnson County Center for the Arts. Last Friday, participants in the four-day charcoal portrait drawing workshop with artist and Arts Center Director Cristy Dunn finished some fantastic portraits. This intensive study introduced participants to basic drawing techniques and then guided them to the more advanced concepts of proportion, tone, value, and edge quality. Both beginners and experienced artists attended this workshop.

    The importance of fiber arts in the Appalachian mountains, worldwide, and throughout history cannot be overstated. The need for warm clothing or the desire to have beautifully woven tapestries is just a part of the story. Though curators and art historians did not use the term fiber arts regularly until the late 1940s and early 1950s, it is certainly one of mankind's oldest art forms.
