A law passed by Vermont lawmakers last week would cap how much hospitals in Vermont can charge for specialty drugs — medications used to treat cancers and autoimmune conditions, like Crohn's disease, often administered through injections or infusions. It’s the latest effort to clamp down on the skyrocketing growth of health care costs in the state.

Every other week, Shana Halliday meets with a 70-year-old whose wife died last year. He had been struggling with isolation and didn’t have anyone to talk to — he said he didn’t want to burden them. He made an appointment with his primary care provider in Rutland, who referred him to Halliday.

It’s common for dentists and pediatricians in Vermont to prescribe fluoride supplements to their patients as a way to prevent tooth decay — what causes cavities. But that option could soon go away. That’s after an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this month, in which agency leaders said they intend to remove supplemental fluoride from the market by the end of October.

In 2014, Gov. Peter Shumlin declared the opioid epidemic in Vermont a crisis. That year, 63 people in the state died from an overdose. A decade later, 183 Vermonters died from an opioid overdose, according to preliminary data from the Department of Health. That’s down from a peak of 244 overdose deaths during the pandemic, but public health officials say it’s still a crisis.

When Dr. Melissa Volansky thinks about her colleagues retiring, she gets the sense that no one is coming to take their place. She works at Lamoille Health Partners in Morrisville, a community health center across the street from Copley Hospital. There’s a view of the mountains outside the front door. Inside, there’s a big rainforest mural in the hallway leading to pediatric exam rooms. Volansky said it's a great place to work — she's been a family medicine doctor there for 25 years.
